The U9 Girls had a great morning out at The Olympic Park for The Capital Girls League Futsal competition. Horrendous traffic problems on The North Circular meant we started without Nieve and Elena (who had to turn back without).
However we still had a god mix of experience and new girls. Keighley and Layla reverted to their own age group from The U10s squad to balance the numbers a bit and our regulars Emily, Emma, Isablelle & Lola were joined by new recruit Katie and debutant Amelie.
Our first opponents were Islington Borough and a single goal from Lola saw us gain a 1-0 victory. It really ought to have been more as Layla in goal never saw the ball all game. Next up were Camden but, despite a number of chances we were unable to score and it finished 0-0.
The third match was against the younger of two Denham Utd. teams. Layla and Katie scored in a 2-0 win. The final game was against Denham’s older team who had looked impressive all morning. With, we thought, a 1st or 2nd place assured we decided to do the right thing and rotate in those girls who had had least pitch time. Denham proved too strong for us and ran out 0-4 winners.
It was only after the game that we found out that positions were being determined on goal difference – not mentioned in the rules, almost unheard of at U9 and in direct contravention of a change that was made in The CGL last season. As a result we came 3rd on goal difference.
Despite this it was a good event at a fantastic venue and all the girls did well.
