A fair dry day, conditions just right for the eagerly awaited return game with Ruislip Town, who had managed to edge RRFC out of the Cup on penalties. Â Being played at Kings College, we found a good pitch and the boys eager to play.
The 10 boys able to play did so as a team throughout the game. Â The defence of Louie, Hugh and Richard held their own and it did not appear to be troubled during the opening encounters. Lewis as goal-keeper not having too much to do. Â George and Harry in mid-field held their own as did Callum and James on the wing. Â Adam had a start as centre forward and chased well.
Unfortunately, RRFC for some reason switched off when Ruislip Town were awarded a free kick on the wing. Â A quickly taken kick and the ball came across the area with the defence ill-prepared. Â This proved costly as a wild swing of the boot only helped the ball past Lewis in goal. Â Shortly afterwards a speculative shot bobbled in front of Lewis who let the ball flip past his hands and the ball trickled over the line. Â In the blink of an eye 2-0 down!
Fortunately, the RRFC team began to show their true colours  and started to play the best football this season.  Aingaran came on for Callum and Hugh moved to mid-field with Louie centre back.  The passing was out-witting the opposition and a couple of chances came RRFC’s way.  Some great inter-change down the right wing then saw 3 good passes to reach Hugh on the edge of the area.  He then beat his man and let fly; 2-1 down at half-time.
The manager’s talk was one of encouragement with a request for caution in terms of not over-committing with all in a line when forward. Â There needed to be a man holding back so that there was a diamond shape. Â the boys understood but unfortunately did not execute. Hence, back to the training ground before the next match.
Ruislip Town managed to get a third after a weak kick out of defence. Â Unfortunate timing as shortly before RRFC had had a strong shout for a penalty turned down. Â That said the boys battled away. Â Lewis in goal had to make some saves and Louie in defence stayed strong. Â A close second with the effort made was Richard; his intelligence on the ball was applauded by the parents and manager. Â Going forward we created a couple of good chances but the Town defence put us off in the final strides.
Ruislip Town then had a good individual effort finished off by a shot off the underside of the bar. Â Still RRFC kept coming forward and trying to get back into the game. Â The reward came when Harry was brought down just outside the box. Â A well executed free kick from him evaded the wall and flashed into the net. Â Unfortunately, it was too late to enable the come back. Â Final score 2-4
